The Night's Hot Too Strong in The Casterton Cup

Once again Victoria’s leading Country trainer Darren Weir made Casterton Cup Day his own, winning the Cup and then providing the quinella in the following race. The Cup was won by ‘inform’ mare The Nights Hot who proved far too strong for her opposition in the $29,000 feature, giving ‘Weiry’ his 2nd Casterton Cup. Twelve years ago he won the race with Young Poly, owned by the same connections as stable star She’s Archie. Perfectly ridden by Damian Lane, The Night’s Hot cruised up to the leaders coming round the turn going on to win by 3 lengths. The city winner, two starts previous, is now likely to head back to the city for her next start. In the following race, talented five-year-old Lord Of Brazil proved too strong for stablemate Shiny Buttons in the Benchmark 72 over 1400m. Given a 10 out of 10 ride by former stable apprentice Jacob Rule, he started from an outside barrier and within 200m he was on the fence. Aided by a saloon run on the fence when the leader drifted off coming round the turn, he went on to win by 2¾ lengths. The son of Lord Of Warriors was purchased by his trainer for $9,500 at a 2YO Sale in the South Island of New Zealand. He will now head to the Swan Hill Cup to try and make it back to back winners for ‘Weiry’ after Can Do was successful last year.
