Puissance targets Spring comeback

Darren Weir has confirmed star galloper Puissance De Lune will be given every chance to race over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

The six-year-old import was last seen at the races finishing a disappointing twelfth in the Sportingbet Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in October, where it was later revealed that he had suffered a tendon injury.

Weir said the son of Shamardal’s owner Gerry Ryan was keen to race the stallion again, as long as scans showed the injury was continuing to improve.

“One lesion is healing up really well but the other lesion is just going a bit slower than expected but we’ve got heaps of time so he’s fine,” Weir said.

“Gerry is keen to race again next Spring and obviously when we bring him into work if things aren’t going the right way then he’ll go and have a career at stud.

“The leg needs a lot more time than what it has had yet but we’re scanning it a lot more than you would a normal horse just to see the progress.

“He’s at the stables now and the vets will have another look at him next week and then all things going well he’ll go back to Gerry’s farm for a bit of a break in the paddock and then he’ll come back into work and have a long rehab program aimed towards the Spring.”

After smashing his rivals in both the 2012 Bendigo Cup (2400m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington, jockey Glen Boss famously declared Puissance De Lune would come back 12 months later and win the Emirates Melbourne Cup.

However things didn’t go to plan for the popular grey during the 2013 Spring, with Puissance De Lune failing to win his next four starts after a slashing first up victory in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in August.
