Mick Celebrates Swan Hill Victory

Darren Weir's ‘Financial Manager’ Mick Leonard had cause for celebration when lightly-raced mare Spiriticity stormed home to win the opening event on Sunday’s Swan Hill meeting. Along with wife Helen, he bred the Invincible Spirit four-year-old and races her with his brothers and close friends. Leonard originally purchased Spiriticity dam Ziplicity, a Tierce mare, privately from a neighbour for $2500 with a foal at foot and again in foal. She now has a 100% breeding record – four to the races for four winners.

The first Ballyrogan won four races for Weir and is now retired in Tasmania. The next Samadji, the winner of five races is now enjoying the life of luxury at Leonard's property. The third foal from Ziplicity, Ischigo, was trained by Leonard and as the winner of one race, she was retired as a hack. Spiriticity began her racing under the guidance of Leonard, a former treasurer of the Ballarat Turf Club and later "Weiry's” Racing Manager. Following two disappointing runs, Mick and Weiry decided to ‘swap horses’ with Mick taking back De Lady Royale (a winner of two races from the Weir stable) to train himself and giving Weir Spiriticity.
