Lord Of Brazil Adds Gold Nugget To Record

Talented six-year-old Lord Of Brazil added the prestigious $60,000 Gold Nugget Handicap to his record on Sunday at Ballarat. He was ridden by replacement jockey Luke Currie after Michelle Payne suffered two fractured vertebrae in a fall from Julinsky at Ararat two days earlier. She was released from hospital on Saturday morning and after learning Currie had been engaged for Lord Of Brazil, she rang him and passed on some helpful hints. This time last year Payne rode Lord Of Brazil five times for three country wins – his maiden at Echuca and twice at Swan Hill plus two placings. His easy Gold Nugget win despite drawing the outside gate in the 14-horse field, was his first run since taking out the Mildura Cup a month earlier, also drawing the outside barrier. His win was the third of a quartet for trainer Darren Weir on the day. He brought up a double for the day when King Buddy stormed through late to win the final race at Ballarat. While earlier in the day stablemates Island Bar and Cash Caddy both broke their Maiden status at Swan Hill in impressive fashion.
