Keep Control Wins Marong Cup

Keep Control win in the Marong Cup (2200m) at Bendigo on Saturday was a highlight in somewhat of a gloomy week for connections.

The enigmatic galloper was a late entry for the Bendigo race after plans were scrapped to run him in the Hobart Cup following a less that flattering gallop. Part owner Lyn Joyce from Hobart was at the ‘Barrier Draw Breakfast’ when the phone call was made that the stable wouldn’t be accepting for the race.

The owner received further bad news the following day when highly promising mare Means A Lot had to be a late scratching from Werribee after a float mishap. Keep Control may still cross Bass Strait and run in the $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup over 2400m on Wednesday, February 29. The win was a first leg of a double for the lethal trainer/jockey combination of Darren Weir and Dean Yendall.

Later in the day talented mare Spartini was dominant 2 ½ length win in the Fillies & Mares 1100m. Stablemate Champagne Espirit provided the quinella when running into second place late for apprentice Brittany Hussey.
