Hussler Wins The William Reid

After given a perfect ride by Glen Boss in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night, Lucky Hussler provided our third Group 1 for the season.

The owners of Lucky Hussler originally wanted to run first up in the TJ Smith Stakes, but after a five minute phone conversation, Glen was able to persuade them into tackling the Group 1 1200m William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

“They weren’t keen, but I said to them - look its $240,000 up for grabs. He’s perfectly placed in this race. So why not?”

Fortunately the owners listened to his advice and he was able to deliver a brilliant ride which backed his judgement.

He wasn’t the best out of the barriers and ended up settling in a tricky midfield position along the rails in the 14 horse field. With limited room coming to the home turn, Boss somehow bustled his way to the outside to cruise on by his rivals to win by 2 lengths.

Winning owner Glenn Makauskas dedicated the win to his late father who at the time of purchase, advised Glenn against buying the Husson gelding.

As Glenn said in his post-race speech, “Thank god he didn’t listen.”

Lucky Hussler transferred to our stables last spring, after a luckless winter campaign in Queensland.

With the asset of our beach and the wonderful staff we have at our Warrnambool stable, he has become the “pin up boy” for how a change of scenery can really make a horse thrive.

In his 6 starts to date with the stable he has finished in the top 3 every time, earning over $550,000 in prizemoney.

He will now contest the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over 1400m on the final Saturday of the Sydney Autumn Carnival, Saturday 18th April.
