Humidor's date with Winx

In front of a sell out crowd of 32,000 at Moonee Valley racecourse on Saturday we had two horses saddled up in the big one - the $3 million Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Melbourne Cup bound Humidor, who's known as Humma around the stables, was still the 'underdog' as he lined up against the mighty mare Winx who was aiming to create history with her 22nd straight victory and third Cox Plate in as many years. The atmosphere around the racecourse was like nothing ever felt as the sea of blue buzzed leading into the race but what was to come was something very unexpected.

As usual Winx travelled strongly as she joined the leading pair in the three wide line passing the 600m but instead of putting a gap on the field as she has done in previous years, to our excitement stable star Humidor was right on her tail chasing hard. As they straightened up Winx took off for home, but Humidor was running the race of his life, slowly pegging back the margin inch by inch. He made the mighty mare fight all the way down the straight where she eventually prevailed by just 0.4 lengths, with a further 4.3 lengths back to the third placegetter. It was heart-in-the-mouth stuff and the excitement of almost running down this superstar of a racehorse (who had a combined winning margin of 12.75 lengths from her first two Cox Plates) was a phenomenal moment for the team and everyone involved with Humma.

Humidor's gallant second placing was something that we will never forget. His efforts picked up a total of $440,000 for his connections not to mention a countless number of admirers as the two-time Group 1 winner now heads into the $6 million event next Tuesday.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the success of Humidor and bring on the first Tuesday in November!
