Four Hobart Cups In Eight Years

Exciting stayer Hurdy Gurdy Man gave trainer Darren Weir his fourth Hobart Cup in eight years when finishing resolutely to take out the $225,000 Group 3 feature. In 2006, Weiry won his first Hobart Cup with True Courser before Offenbach saluted two years later. Evergreen galloper Gotta Keep Cool gave Weiry ‘back to back’ victories when proving too strong a year later. Hurdy Gurdy Man has only missed a place once in 11 starts when racing at 2000m or further. Dropping 5kg on his third placing a week earlier in the Terang Cup, he was beautifully ridden by Glen Boss, charging home to run down the pacemaker The Cleaner. He is raced by his breeders, Ed and Robyn Shakespeare who nearly had the perfect day when their 3YO filly First Bloom finished 2nd in the Listed Strutt Stakes. Hurdy Gurdy Man will now attempt to win Tasmania’s other feature staying event, the $225,000 Launceston Cup over 2400m on Wednesday, February 27.
