Filly Testament To Trainers Ability

Champagne Esprit’s win in the Super VOBIS 3YO at Echuca on Monday, was testament to her trainers ability. She was having her 10th for the preparation after resuming with a third at Donald in February. Since then she was won three races for her connections and nearly $40,000 in prizemoney. Her connections include Mick Watts, who has always had a horse in the stable since ‘Weiry’ first obtained his licence. ‘Weiry’ says “not only has Mick been a fantastic owner for my stable, but he has become a great mate”.

Champagne Esprit completed a treble for the stable, with Skimalong and Lord Of Brazil winning the opening two races on the program. All three were ridden by Michelle Payne and it was the stable’s third treble in eight days. A week earlier it had three winners at Mildura, then on Saturday a two-state treble including Pay The Aces and Heza Bargain bolting in at Morphettville. Already ‘Weiry’ has sewn up his 7th consecutive Victorian Country Trainers Premiership with 96 1/2 winners this season and with just needing two more winners, he's at unbackable odds to better his best tally for a season of 127 set five years ago.
