Broken Wins Carlyon Stakes in Unusual Circumstances

Consistent galloper Broken won the biggest race of his career at Moonee Valley on Saturday in unusual circumstances. Coming from well back on the turn in the Listed $120,000 Carlyon Stakes, he flew along the inside fence but narrowly failed to catch Unanimously. However over the concluding stages, Unanimously ran out abruptly causing interference to third placegetter Umgeton. Umgeton protested successfully and as Broken had split them, he was awarded the race. The ‘pocket size’ son of Halo Homewrecker has been a fantastic money spinner for connections. Purchased as a weanling by trainer Darren Weir on the advice or renowned New Zealand ‘pinhooker’ Mark Baker for $18,000, taking his prizemoney just shy of $350,000. Coincidentally of his seven wins to date, Nick Hill became the first senior rider to salute on him – all his other victories have been apprentice riders.
