Extra Special

The stands erupted at Flemington on Saturday afternoon when Extra Brut hit the lead at the 300m mark before drawing clear to salute in the Group 1 $2 million AAMI Victoria Derby – Darren’s first Derby win and the biggest win of rider Johnny Allen’s career.

It was an outstanding result for Brad Spicer and the big bunch of owners involved in this three year old who has had a tremendous preparation that saw him take out four races ranging from a maiden victory at Sandown at the end of August all the way to the big stage at Flemington for his first Group 1!

Johnny, who has partnered him to all his career victories, again rode him a treat on Saturday. Drifting well back from barrier thirteen, he found himself out wide with cover behind a hot tempo out in front. He got a cart up into the home turn where he peeled out deepest and burst down the straight, storming home for a one length victory over Stars of Carrum and Chapada.

A huge congratulations to everyone involved in Extra Brut’s success and with his eyes set firmly on another Group 1 assignment this weekend it could be a massive week for all!
