Ballarat Cup

 

 

It had been a long time between drinks, 14 years in fact, since Darren and the team brought home our hometown cup but the wait was finally over on Saturday.

 

We had a huge team of six runners saddled up for the feature event of the day, the Listed $350,000 Sportsbet Ballarat Cup over 2200m with the combination of Kiwia and the in form John Allen eventually prevailing.

 

Under a brilliantly executed ride from Johnny out of barrier ten, he managed to find the rails just a touch worse than midfield and never left the fence. Travelling strongly as he entered the straight, he saved all the ground and started to run down the leader Pilote D’essai, who had bolted clear at the 400m mark. As the leader began to tire, it was Kiwia who stormed home along the rails and with the stands erupting with excitement, he drew clear to salute by almost two lengths.

 

Saturday’s win was the seventh of Kiwia’s 27 start career - a fantastic result for everyone involved after his luckless fifth placing at Group 3 level at Sandown last start!

 

The celebrations drew long into the night for what was a momentous occasion for all involved - a huge congratulations to the team and all of his owners!
